Listen to the Steel City Beavers song

The Steel City Beavers crew together beside the water

Meet the team

Different roles.
One boat.

People who coach, steer and paddle for each other, all moving in the same direction.

The crew

Every person
adds power.

A dragon boat only works when everyone works together. Each role has a different responsibility, but the rhythm belongs to the whole crew.

Coaches

The people who
build the crew.

Our coaches plan every session, teach the stroke from scratch and keep the crew improving week after week.

Damian Napper, Coach at Steel City Beavers

Coach

Damian Napper

Damian has proudly represented Great Britain on four occasions, not only as a paddler but also as Assistant Senior A GB Coach. Over his international career, he has earned an incredible 5 bronze medals, a testament to his drive, skill and dedication to the sport.

As a coach, Damian brings both international experience and a love of helping paddlers grow. He knows what it takes to compete at the top and enjoys sharing that knowledge with the crew to build confidence, strength and teamwork on and off the water.

Steve Clague, Coach at Steel City Beavers

Coach

Steve Clague

Steve has paddled at the very highest level, representing Great Britain on the international stage, as well as competing with club crews over the years. With a wealth of experience behind him, he brings passion, dedication and a steady hand to our team.

When you're on the water with Steve, you'll see his focus on technique, teamwork and getting the very best out of every paddler.

Off the water, he's always ready with encouragement (and maybe a story or two from racing at the top level!).

Jane Burren, Coach at Steel City Beavers

Coach

Jane Burren

Jane has twice been selected to represent Great Britain, and she brings valuable experience from paddling with a variety of teams across the North of England.

Her coaching style is nurturing and grounded. She works to build a positive team spirit, serves as a calming influence during race preparations, and sparks the passion needed to drive the team to perform at their best.

Tim O'Kane, Coach at Steel City Beavers

Coach

Tim O'Kane

Known to us as our gentle giant. If Carlsberg made fathers, they'd make Tim. A huge supporter of our junior paddlers, Tim has been instrumental in their journey, from cheering on his eldest daughter representing GB, to backing his son as he works hard to follow in her footsteps.

On the water, Tim is an absolute powerhouse: tireless, strong and always giving 100%. Off the water, he's just as dependable, always ready with advice, encouragement or simply a helping hand.

Andy Hyde, Coach at Steel City Beavers

Coach

Andy Hyde

The calm, the DJ, the song maker. Andy brings a wealth of knowledge to the coaching team and has a real gift for making any beaver feel at home.

He has travelled the world with past teams, and now he is ready to do it all again with the Beavers.

Helms

Calm heads
at the stern.

Helms steer the boat, support the crew and keep every session safe, turning twenty paddlers of effort into one direction.
